One of the great things about Sicily is the mix of Italian and Mediterranean culture. It has the great Italian influence, but it also has a lot of similarities to Greece in that it has great old ruins (check out Agrigento), an amazing coast (some of my family is from Sciacca), and a lighter, more seafood-influenced cuisine. In Sicily, there is a huge citrus influence so a lot of their dishes (and their decor) have lemon or orange.
Ten years ago, I was lucky enough to visit Sicily for a wedding and during our trip, my family (grandparents came along, too) and I visited all of the towns that my family is from. We even stopped by to see my great aunt in the house my great-grandmother was born in in 1900. It was an incredible opportunity and I learned so much about my heritage!
Since my Sicilian background is such an important part of who I am, I decided to decorate my kitchen with a Sicilian theme! I'm working on gathering bits and pieces to add to the decor and I'm planning to paint the walls the gorgeous turquoise color you see in some of these pictures. Of course, I'm adding lemons to the theme! If you have any suggestion about how to make my kitchen more rustic Sicilian while staying on a budget, please let me know! Until then, enjoy the collage I put together of beautiful Sicily and some kitchen inspiration!
