Gretchen started a new etsy page where you can buy her work. Her new company is called Chatoyan Trends and she takes special requests (like you see here!). You can also take a look at her gallery so see how versatile she is! I can't wait to display my tiles so that everyone can see them! Hope you find something you like as well!!
So I know I have mentioned my friend Gretchen before and I've spoken wonders of her art abilities, but I'd just like to show off (and brag about) my new Sicilian tiles that she made for my kitchen. I called her up and told her that I was decorating my kitchen in a Sicilian theme and sent her pictures of some of the things that inspired my decision to go that route. I told her I wanted tiles to look rustic and Mediterranean while including some lemon accents. Then, I told her to just run with it. I knew she would send me something incredible but when I received my tiles yesterday (they are pictured above), I was sooo pleased! She outdid herself!! These are absolutely beautiful and I'm so happy with them! Plus, they were hand-painted so that makes them even more special :)

My family comes from Sicily. In fact, my dad is 100% Sicilian. And I'm so proud of that heritage! Italy has an incredible reputation and everyone knows about its delicious food, good wine, and amazing artists. Most people, however, don't know very much about Sicily - the little island south of the boot. That, my friends, is beautiful place!
One of the great things about Sicily is the mix of Italian and Mediterranean culture. It has the great Italian influence, but it also has a lot of similarities to Greece in that it has great old ruins (check out Agrigento), an amazing coast (some of my family is from Sciacca), and a lighter, more seafood-influenced cuisine. In Sicily, there is a huge citrus influence so a lot of their dishes (and their decor) have lemon or orange. Ten years ago, I was lucky enough to visit Sicily for a wedding and during our trip, my family (grandparents came along, too) and I visited all of the towns that my family is from. We even stopped by to see my great aunt in the house my great-grandmother was born in in 1900. It was an incredible opportunity and I learned so much about my heritage! Since my Sicilian background is such an important part of who I am, I decided to decorate my kitchen with a Sicilian theme! I'm working on gathering bits and pieces to add to the decor and I'm planning to paint the walls the gorgeous turquoise color you see in some of these pictures. Of course, I'm adding lemons to the theme! If you have any suggestion about how to make my kitchen more rustic Sicilian while staying on a budget, please let me know! Until then, enjoy the collage I put together of beautiful Sicily and some kitchen inspiration! I'm back! I've been gone for over a week traveling for either business or to visit my family in Kansas. I have finally gotten back and I'm ready to post some more Christmas recipes!! Today I am using some Italian Christmas recipes my friend Amanda sent me from Food & Wine magazine (thanks, Amanda!).
